Anton Corbijn Dokumentation Squaring the Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis

Wow, das sieht sehr vielversprechend aus! Eine Dokumentation über die Albumcover-Design-Schmiede HIPGNOSIS und das von Anton Corbijn (filmmaker, photographer, album art designer, music video director). Der Film feierte seine Premiere beim Telluride Film Festival 2. bis 5.9.2022.

Tolle Nachricht. Der Film enthält neue Interviews u. a. von David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Aubrey Powell … Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page und weiteren interssanten Persönlichkeiten. Storm Thorgerson kommt  selbstverständlich auch reichlich zu Wort. Sehr viel Archivmaterial gibt es zu sehen.

Wie es zu diesem Projekt kam, erklärt Corbijn so.

ANTON CORBIJN: Po came to Amsterdam to talk to me and to see if I was interested in making a documentary. Just listening to his stories, I realized there was a great story in there because it’s of course culturally important, but it’s also a human story between these two guys. So that was nice to have that interwoven.

I had all the Peter Gabriel sleeves, for sure… I had a lot of Pink Floyd stuff. When I grew up, music was my big love. I really connected to it… [collecting] record sleeves and music magazines. This was the ’70s, you didn’t have Google or anything, but all the information you needed was on a record sleeve.

There’s a lot of attention, again, for album sleeves, but the importance of album sleeves will never be the same as in the ‘70s.
