David Gilmour konfrontiert Glastonbury Veranstalter mit Rick Wright’s letztem Wunsch!

Die jährlich stattfindende Q-Award Zeremonie fand am 6. Oktober im “Grovenor House Hotel” in London statt. Unter den diesjährigen Preisträgern war auch David Gilmour! Er gewann in der Kategorie: “Outstanding Contribution To Music”! Er wurde für seine herausragenden Leistungen für die Musik ausgezeichnet.

Als Gilmour den Preis entgegennahm, der ihm von Alex Patterson (The Orb) überreicht wurde, gab es Standing Ovations. In seiner emotionalen Dankesrede widmete Gilmour den Award seinem Freund und Kollegen Richard Wright, mit dem er 40 Jahre gearbeitet hat. Ohne ihn könne er nun viele Songs nicht mehr spielen, das macht ihn sehr traurig. Gilmour erwähnte bei der Rede zum ersten Mal, dass Wright’s letzter Wunsch vor seinem Tod gewesen war, noch einmal bei einem großen Festival aufzutreten, so eines wie Glastonbury.

DAVID GILMOUR: I’m going to dedicate this, if you don’t mind, to my old friend and colleague Richard Wright who died a couple of weeks ago, (and) with whom I had worked for 40-odd years now. That’s now come to an end. There’s all sorts of music that I will not be able to play again without him. That’s a source of sadness for me.

One of the last things he wanted to do was play a big outdoor festival such as Glastonbury. We weren’t able to do that due to all sorts of strange reasons, which, again, is a sadness.

He deserves this as much as I do. You could say that he was in the position of second fiddle, slightly behind some of the pushier chaps in the front. But his work was mighty important to our entire careers.

Gilmour sagte dies sehr bewusst, denn er wußte, dass im Publikum mit Michael Eavis und dessen Tochter Emily Eavis, die Veranstalter des Glastonbury Festivals saßen. Emily Eavis verteidigte sich danach, sie erklärte, dass es einfach zu kurzfristig war und man nicht so ohne Weiteres einem der Headliner Kings of Leon, Jay-Z oder The Verve sagen konnte, sorry ihr seid jetzt raus, nicht mehr Headliner, weil jemand Größeres gekommen sei.

EMILY EAVIS: We were obviously upset to hear him say that, but hopefully he understands, or I think maybe he has been misinformed by someone that it was some sort of thing about them, but it wasn’t at all, it was just purely because we couldn’t fit them on anywhere. We had a call from their agents three weeks before the festival, and we’d already booked three headliners, and there was nothing we could do apart from bump someone off, and we’ve never done that before in their lives. Kings of Leon; it was the biggest moment of their lives so far, we couldn’t just say ‘Sorry, you’ve now got to play underneath someone because someone bigger has come along.
