Nick Mason lässt neues Drum-Kit mit Hokusai Wave Motiv anfertigen

Bleiben wir bei Nick Mason und dessen Besuch der Eröffnungsfeier von Pink Floyd – Their Mortal Remains vergangene Woche in Los Angeles.

Bei den vielen Gesprächen mit Journalisten sagte der Pink Floyd Schlagzeuger etwas Interessantes über sein legendäres Drum-Kit mit dem The Great Wave Bild des japanischen Künstlers Katsushika Hokusai. Die Inspiration dafür stammte von Pink Floyd’s Japan-Tournee 1972. Mason beauftragte 1973 die Künstlerin Katy Hepburn, die Bass-Drums mit dem Motiv zu bemalen.

NICK MASON: It’s just a favorite painting of mine anyway, but we actually used it as a tour logo in ’72, I think. It lasted really well and I’m very fond of it. I love the drums as sort of objet d’art. I have enormous affection for it, in fact, I’m having another kit made to look more or less the same because I don’t want to take this one out on tour so I’m making a new one.

Das Mason sein Original Hokusai-Wave-Drum-Kit nicht mehr auf Tour mitnehmen will, ist mehr als verständlich. Stattdessen lässt er sich ein neues anfertigen, wie er in L.A. bestätigte. Das kann dann wohl nur bedeuten, dass wir ihn 2022 auf Tour mit Saucerful Of Secrets damit spielen sehen werden. Sehr cool!

Neue Pink Floyd Exponate

Bei dieser Ausstellung erstmals zu sehen ist Michael Kamens 170-seitige kommentierte Musikpartitur zu The Wall. Aubrey Powell berichtete auf welche außergewöhnliche Art und Weise man zu dem Manuskript kam. Jemand kam damit zur Ausstellung. Er hatte es um $ 150 auf einem Flohmarkt gekauft. Powell konnte es kaum glauben, als er es sah. Er schickte ein Foto an Roger Waters, der vom Fund begeistert war.

AUBREY POWELL: I mean, yesterday, we had an incident here. A guy walked in with the annotated orchestral music for ‘The Wall,’ which Michael Kamen had written, and he had the book. I didn’t take it that seriously, that he was going to turn up with it, and suddenly there it was, this beautiful book. I immediately photographed it and sent it to Roger Waters and said, ‘Look what this guy’s found. What serendipity is that?’ And I sent it to Roger and he said, ‘Oh my God, that’s amazing.’ And was I told the guy bought it in a yard sale for $150. It’s got to be worth a fortune.

Also new of last week was a Panaflex camera used by director Alan Parker to shoot the film version of the “The Wall” that Panavision had just volunteered to drop off. All these things come out of the woodwork. This is the fifth exhibition, and not one of them have I got bored yet, because there’s always something exciting that’s new.
