Ex-Oasis Bassist Andy Bell erklärt, wie er dazu kam, mit Pink Floyd zu spielen

Vor ein paar Tagen klopfte es an der Tür von Andy Bell und da stand Pink Floyd’s Manager (nehme an Paul Loasby), der ihm eine Kopie der Single des Record Store Day 2020, Arnold Layne Live 2007, schenkte. Was für eine schöne Geste. Für den ehemaligen Bassisten von Oasis war das eine völlig unerwartete Überraschung, die lebhafte Erinnerungen an einen wertvollen Moment in seiner Karriere zurückkehren ließ.

THE MADCAPS LAST LAUGH

Am 10. Mai 2007 versammelten sich viele große Namen u.a. Kevin Ayers, John Paul Jones, Robyn Hitchcock, Damon Albarn, Chrissie Hynde und Captain Sensible in der Londoner Barbican Hall zu The Madcap’s Last Laugh, einem Tribute-Konzert zu Ehren des 2006 verstorbenen Syd Barrett. Die Mitglieder von Pink Floyd David Gilmour, Nick Mason und Rick Wright waren dabei, ebenso wie Roger Waters.

Zum Abschluss traten Pink Floyd (ohne Roger Waters, der weg musste :-)) auf um Arnold Layne zu spielen mit Andy Bell am Bass.

ANDY BELL: It was the greatest thing ever. I’d been called in to play bass in the house band for the concert. Nick Laird-Clowes from The Dream Academy was the bandleader and we became the musical core for all the guests. During our final rehearsal, this guy close to the Floyd camp had popped his head in to listen to us. The next morning I got a call from Nick, who told me that the Floyd really approved of what was going on and wanted to do a tune: ‘Roger is going to be there, but he won’t play with them. So will you be Roger?’ I didn’t even hesitate.

Bell traf die Band erst, als die erste Hälfte der Show abgeschlossen war.

ANDY BELL: I got pulled into a side room at the Barbican and they were all in there. David Gilmour had his Strat unplugged and turned to me: ‘We’re just making sure you know what we’re going to do here. Let’s run though it quickly.’ What was really cool onstage was that Nick Mason didn’t count in the song with his sticks. Instead, David Gilmour walked over to me and went [in an impossibly polite voice]: ‘One, two, three, four…’ It was all done in this lovely, very English way.

Ich erinnere mich an diesen Abend. Es herrschte eine bis zum Schluss große Spannung und Hoffnung, dass Pink Floyd und Waters ein weiteres Mal nach Live 8 gemeinsam auftreten würden. Waters trat im ersten Teil auf. Er hatte für einen gemeinsamen Auftritt keine Zeit, weil er seine Freundin vom Flughafen abholen musste. WHAT?
