Nick Laird-Clowes: David Gilmour’s brother Mark had been the lead guitarist in The Act and David offered us the use of his studio to make our first demos, with Mark engineering. We just set up in the big room as if we were about to do a gig, and played and recorded our set; quite a few of these later became Dream Academy B sides. (Disc 5).We continued writing together but by the Summer of ’83, aside from recording a few more demos, we hadn’t got much further and the gigs were getting a little more sporadic. Gilbert was asked go on tour playing the music for a dance troupe and I needed to get a job too.
That same week I saw an advert in Melody Maker looking for presenters for a new Channel 4youth programme called The Tube. I went down to a church hall in Paddington and found myself with about 300 other people around my age. I was interviewed by the show’s producer Malcolm Gerrie and a few weeks later got a letter asking me to go up to Newcastle to do a pieceto camera with Jools Holland. He was to be the main presenter along with Paula Yates, and I became a guest presenter on the show once a month.I loved Newcastle with its strong Geordie identity and architecture.
After the first few shows, I was sent out to do an interview with director Geoff Wonfor and a film crew. On the way there in the car, he pointed out the disused, empty shipyards and I noticed people already waiting in line for the pubs to open at 11am. …………
I had met Paul Simon when I was in New York a few years before and we had stayed in touch. When he came through London I played him the demo of our new song with the chant chorus. He was giving me a ride home on the way back to his hotel and just before I got out of the car, he said: “Hey, what are you going to call that song?” I said the working title was ‘The Morning Lasted All Day’. He wasn’t impressed and added: “And you can’t call it ‘Ah Hey Ah Mamama’. Nobody will know what to ask for in the record shops.”I had written something down in my notebook a few days before, from my time working in Newcastle on The Tube.“What about ‘Life in a Northern Town’?” I asked. The car stopped. “That’s a great title for a song” he said. And I got out.A few days later, I booked a small local studio for the afternoon and went in with a two-track mix of the demo. Over the top of the chant chorus of the song I now sang ‘Life in a Northern Town’ – ‘All the work shut down’ and the end ad libs.
I went to see David Gilmour and played him the new track. He said that he felt it was the best thing we had done so far and offered to help mix it.
I went back to David to discuss the idea. He told me that he didn’t want to sit in a studio with us for six months, but suggested we continue recording the way we had made ‘Northern Town’, with me and George Nicholson producing, and now with his engineer Andrew Jackson recording. “You get it the way you want, and if I think we can make any of it better, we can do that together in my studio before we mix it.” And that’s how it went. David completely understood the music we were trying to make which was often quite intricate and delicate. He was an absolute master in the studio, shared our love of psychedelia and with his knowledge of textures and sound worlds was exactly what we needed. ………..
