Pink Floyd starteten ihre The Wall Tour in Los Angeles am 7. Februar 1980.

Die Idee für The Wall keimte in Roger Waters langsam, aber stetig während der Pink Floyd In The Flesh-Tour 1977, bis es dann in Montreal zum Eklat kam und er einen widerspenstigen Fan anspuckte.

ROGER WATERS: Ich fühlte dieses extreme Gefühl der Entfremdung von diesen Hunderttausenden von Menschen, die alle Bier tranken und johlten und schrien. Plötzlich hatte ich das Bild einer Arena vor Augen, um die eine Mauer gebaut war, und eine Band, die hinter dieser Mauer spielte. Ich weiß noch, dass ich dachte: ‘Das ist eine großartige Idee’. Also fing ich an, mit den anderen Jungs in der Band zu reden, und natürlich hielten mich alle für völlig verrückt.

BOB EZRIN: I met Roger through his then wife Carolyne, who once worked for me. On the ‘Animals’ tour, they stopped in Toronto where I was living, and on the limousine ride out to the gig Roger told me about his feeling of alienation from the audience and his desire sometimes to put a wall between him and them. I recall saying flippantly, “Well why don’t you?.” A year, 18 months later I got a call asking me to come to his home to talk to him about the possibility of working together on this project called ‘The Wall.’ (MOJO)

Drei Jahre später definierte Pink Floyd unter der Regie von Roger Waters das Konzept einer Rockshow neu. Hunderte von „Ziegelsteinen“ überspannten die Bühne. Im Januar 1980 begannen Pink Floyd mit den dreiwöchigen Proben für die Live-Shows von The Wall. Die Proben der Musiker fanden in den Leeds Studios in Hollywood statt, die Proben für die Show selbst wurden in den MGM Studios in Los Angeles abgehalten. Am 21. Januar 1980 wechselten Pink Floyd und ihr Team in die Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena und starteten die Proben für die Konzert-Produktion von The Wall.

Am 7. Februar 1980 fand in der Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena eine Uraufführung von etwas statt, das die Konzertwelt zuvor bisher nicht gesehen hatte, Pink Floyds The Wall Show.

NICK MASON: In der ersten Nacht in L.A. gab es einen kleinen Zwischenfall. Am Anfang gab es eine Explosion. Sie entzündete einen Vorhang am oberen Ende des Saals. Wir machten eine Weile weiter, dann gingen Kohlendioxid-Kanister in die Luft, und wir schalteten die Hausbeleuchtung ein und unterbrachen die Show, bis sie das Feuer gelöscht hatten. Bemerkenswertes:

Das Bühnenbild bestand aus 450 faltbaren Pappbausteinen, die eine ca. 10 m hohe und ca. 79 m breite Wand bildeten, sowie aus animierten Projektionen, aufblasbaren Objekten und einem nachgebauten Stuka-Sturzkampfbomber.
Die Show beginnt mit einem Zeremonienmeister, Cynthia Fox (KMET Radio DJ) begrüßt das Publikum auf provokante Art und Weise, während eine mit den Pink Floyd Gesichtern maskierte Band die Bühne betritt und „In the Flesh?“ zu spielen beginnt.
Pink Floyd spielten glänzend an diesem Abend. Man merkte die Spannungen in der Band rund um Rick Wright keinesfalls.
Es brannte während des 1. Sets der Show. Es ging so weit, dass Roger während What Shall We Do Now? das Konzert unterbricht, damit es gelöscht werden kann.
Das Instrumental The Last Few Bricks ist mit 12 Minuten die längste Version der Tour. Sensationell! Hört euch das an.

We’ll scroll back to the beginning of that bit then and we will carry on when everything is under control. I’m sorry but that’s the best thing to do, so just be patient. If we can have the house lights, that would be good.

Ansage: Nachdem das Feuer gelöscht wurde.

ROGER WATERS: One, two. Wasn’t that exciting? OK, well as soon as we can have the house lights, we will go back to the bit in the story where the moon was out, and the clouds were going across the moon.
